The Fountain, Princes Street Gardens, after Whistler
Mixed media and pastels on archival paper
Walking through Princes Street gardens at dusk can be a truly magical experience. The contrast between the ornate fountain and powerful castle is very compelling.
American painter James McNeil Whistler (1835-1903) was renowned for his nocturnal scenes. He was able to create an unearthly, almost luminary atmosphere. In Mr.J's version, he has chosen to diffuse his colours almost into the realm of monochrome.
